This schoolteacher had a renal transplant in Edinburgh. The donor was her sister. See our photo-story for more information. |

The first kidney transplant in the UK was carried out in Edinburgh in 1961 (Read more about the history of transplantation in Edinburgh). Since then many hundreds of patients have experienced the benefits of kidney transplantation in the Edinburgh Renal Transplant Unit. In 1995 the Renal Transplant Unit joined with the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, so that the efforts of the transplant surgeons, doctors, nurses and other staff could be combined. In 2000, the unit's first combined kidney and pancreatic transplant was performed. Each year we do more than 50 kidney transplants and 50 liver transplants. The area covered by the unit includes Lothian and the Borders, Fife, and Tayside (map of Scotland's Health Regions), a population of about 1.8 million. In addition, the Unit undertakes live related transplants for a much wider region.

This amazing photograph shows a transplanted kidney producing urine just after it has been plumbed into its new owner. One of many photographs taken in the unit by Charlie MacDonald. This project was sponsored by an educational grant from Roche Pharmaceuticals. |
