Undergraduates in the Edinburgh curriculum have their major teaching in Renal Medicine in Year 4. Useful links and downloads relevant to the running of this attachment are available at the foot of this section.
| Aims and Objectives | Knowledge objectives are available to all directly from here. For a detailed listing of the full aims and objectives of our renal curriculum, go to the full text of the study guide. This is within EEMeC, the electronic curriculum for the undergraduate course in medicine. Access to EEMeC is restricted. |
| Assessment MCQs | MCQs for self assessment and to give a guide to the level of knowledge that we are seeking are available via EEMeC to users with an Edinburgh login. See the Renal page, Resources (or similar). Part of the self-learning MCQ bank. Don't expect to get them all right. The pass mark for this set of 14 questions is approximately 45/56 if you guess the ones you don't know. |
| Case histories | Outline core case histories, with links to learning resources |
| Data interpretation |
Our own ... one day? |
| Diet |
Notes about renal diets for students and a quiz to assess yourself. Don't miss the Edren diet pages though. |
| Diseases | There is more than enough information in EdRenINFO for most undergraduate purposes on common and important specific renal diseases. |
| Examination | A video describing an introduction to the clinical assessment of patients with renal disease, as part of a simple integrated clinical examination, is available on line for Edinburgh staff and students (click on Supporting Materials, or Resources, on the Renal pages of Y4) . There is little or nothing there on assessment of diseases of the collecting system, bladder, prostate etc. |
| Fluid prescribing | An online resource how to prescribe fluids. Comments welcome, to renal@ed.ac.uk Paddy Gibson's .ppt presentation how to prescribe fluids covers most of the same ground. |
| Glomerulonephritis | The Music of Glomerulonephritis - without the music. All you need to know though. |
| Other | EdRenINFO has links to diet, blood pressure, normal kidney function, and many other topics. |
| Reference sources | Some key reference sources - textbooks and others. |
| Urine | Examination of the urine by dipstick urinalysis, and by microscopy or other technique |
| UTI | Some information on Urinary Tract Infections as it is only briefly revisited in Year 4. |
The following downloads and links are relevant to the Y4 renal attachment:
The Unit also contributes to teaching of Medicine, basic sciences, and transferable skills throughout the medical curriculum in Edinburgh, some listed below.
| Year One Core Course | ![]() |
We contribute to this but at present there is not a significant amount of info on the web. Refer to the postgraduate resources below, and to educational resource links for more information relevant to the normal function and physiology of the kidney. |
| Year One PBLP (Special Study Module, SSM1) | A list of previous topics run from the Unit is available | |
| Introduction to Clinical Practice | An introduction to clinical skills, largely delivered in general practices, but with input from Renal Medicine, among others. Log in to EEMeC to see this, and the video of examination of the renal system integrated with examination of other systems. | |
| Second Year Options (2yO) (SSM2 and SSM3) | ![]() |
This course covers a range of medical and non-medical subjects studied in small groups, leading to production of a website at the end of each 4-week block. The course was founded by members of the Unit when websites were created - now Wikis. See the 2yO Course website |
| Year Four SSMs | Opportunities are available for these individual, 8-week projects. | |
| Honours programs | Students from Immunology, Pathology and other schools come to do research projects in the associated laboratories of the Renal Unit. See Research. | |
| Elective attachments | For students from other medical schools - enquiries are handled centrally, contact the College of Medicine Office | |
| Cases | Cases for postgraduates is hardly yet off the ground - Want to help? (This Q largely aimed at UK trainees) Contact ANT via renal@ed.ac.uk. Illustrative cases for undergraduates are pretty basic but are linked to learning resources. | |
| Diuretics | Planned ..... | |
| Electronic nephron | ![]() |
The electronic nephron ... may be in production ..... one day. Wanna make this as a SSM topic? |
| Genetics | See Single Gene Disorders (a few lines below) | |
| Links to other resources | Go to links to educational resources elsewhere | |
| MCQs | MCQs primarily aimed at undergraduates but useful for all are visitable from the links above in the undergraduate section. | |
| Single gene disorders | A list of single gene disorders affecting the kidney. Possibly fairly up to date. | |
| Electronic radiology | ANT's May 2001 presentation on Why PACS? | |
| Medicine and the internet | ANT's November 2000 presentation on Medicine and the Internet in Edinburgh | |
